We left Cairo in 2015 and never looked back.
Dayra means circle. It began on a beach in Nuweiba with three friends, Randa, Mohamed and Ahmed, an acacia that was bare when they arrived and turned green again as the people came, and a dog called Zeus who decided he was in charge.
Dayra grew into a circle of musicians, artists, backpackers and wanderers who call it home, however short they stay. In 2022 the circle moved north to Ain Sokhna, an easier drive from Cairo, and kept the music going.
Zeus was Dayra's guardian, and his memory is part of every Dayra night. His successors keep watch now, and dogs are always welcome.
Drum circles, fire-pit nights, Afro dance, live sets and DJs. It began in Nuweiba in 2015 and carries on by the sea in Sokhna.
